Fun with Twitter

In college, one of my favorite classes was "17th century English Literature". I'm such a dork, I'm not even embarrassed by this fact. One of the best parts of the class was reading Samuel Pepys diary. People, it's ten kinds of awesome. I annoyed Kevin to no end on our honeymoon in London by referring to Pepys as if he was my tour guide. "Oh there's the church where Pepys stayed during the great fire!" "Look, the pub Pepys used to go on about!" My husband is a very patient man. God love him...

Anyway, if you are a dork like me, you can now follow Samuel Pepys on Twitter. What else do you have to do anyway?

Book Review - Quick Takes

This book annoyed me. It has great reviews at Amazon so I'm apparently in the minority here. Basically it is a weight loss memoir. It's weird because the author claims she is fat but does not care. (Full disclosure: I never believe it when fat people say they don't want to lose weight. Never. I keep hearing about these people. They're fat. They're healthy. They're happy. Blah, blah, blah. I file these people in with Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster. I want to believe but I just need some evidence.) The author decides that she will diet basically to create a book. She has written successful memoirs in the past about other struggles in her life so she supposes weight loss should provide her with tons of new material. It didn't. You will be shocked to learn that she eats less and exercises more. It works. She loses 30 pounds and realizes how strong she really is.

Whatever...

I could write a weight loss memoir 10,000 times better than this one but, apparently, you actually have to lose weight to write a weight loss memoir.

This book, on the other hand, was ten kinds of good. This was a Kindle freebie. Try to ignore the lame cover and title. It's short and trust me here, it ain't literature. But it is so funny. Confession time. I read this book in one sitting and I literally LOL'd for 3 straight hours. I just loved the main character. When I was describing her to Kevin, I realized that I have much in common with the heroine of this book. She isn't a chubby. Baptist housewife but her reactions and style of speech is very similar to yours truly. So, if you hate my guts, you prolly wanna skip this one.

This was free on Kindle too. The blurb described it as a 'delightful romp". Listen people. I spend most of my life doing laundry or pushing a grocery cart. I need a delightful romp from time to time and I don't care what you think about it.

I don't know what to tell you about this one. It got great reviews. I've read other good books by this author. But I just wasn't feeling it. It's about two sisters whose mom cracks up and leaves. That's pretty much the book. If it ever gets made into a movie, I think Nicole Kidman will play the mom. I hope it doesn't get made into a movie.

Scenes from Kline Manor

At the Whitt's BBQ Drive-up window.

Me: Katie can you hold these buns for me so they don't get squished?

Katie: These buns are huge! Know who else has big buns?

Me (stupidly thinking she was gonna say Burger King) : Who?

Katie: Anna

Book Review - The Weird Sisters

"I'm going to change," she whispered to herself , as if the words had the power to do the hard work for her."

Oh this book made me so happy. There is just no way I can adequately describe how awesome it is. Here is my attempt anyway.

First, the book is about three sisters. They all return home to help their mother recover from cancer. It was interesting because these three girls, just like my own, fall comfortably into the birth order cliche. I grew up without sisters so I am fascinated by the interaction.

The aspect of the book that thrilled me though is the family's obsession with reading. The dad is a college professor who focuses his life (and most of his conversation) on William Shakespeare. The rest of the family will read whatever whenever.

"Then you'll be needing a library card, won't you?" she said finally, as though that solved everything (which, in our family, it nearly did)."

That quote very nearly summarizes my entire life. I grew up in a family of non-readers. Any my large extended family not only did not read, they made fun of me for my reading habit. "Why does she always have a book?" I heard that question many, many times. The answer was pretty simple. I liked books more than people. That's not technically true. I just liked the people in books more than the people in real life. They were so much more interesting. They mostly still are.

If you are a 'reader', then read this book. You'll see yourself and find it amusing. If you're not a reader...what the hell is wrong with you?

Have I mentioned how much I used to hate basketball? Yeah...it was my most unfavorite sport until my kids starting playing it. We just wrapped up our second year of Upward. Savannah aged out of the program so just Kaylee and Ava played this year. For 8 weeks, our Saturdays were centered around morning and afternoon games and all of Kevin's disposable income was centered around Katie and the snack bar. We Kline's are a snack loving people. We enjoyed the basketball too.
